The era of the Album. Sonic identities became regional religions.
The Boom Bap
Gritty, sample-heavy, lyrical. The sound of the subway and the cold concrete.
Defined by the SP-1200 sampler, which limited sampling time and gave drums a crunchy, low-bit texture. Producers like DJ Premier and Pete Rock chopped jazz and soul records to create a "dusty" aesthetic. Lyrically, the focus was on dense wordplay, storytelling, and maintaining "street authenticity" above all else.

G-Funk
Synthesizers, P-Funk samples, deep bass. The sound of lowriders and endless sunshine.
Pioneered by Dr. Dre, G-Funk slowed the tempo down. It relied less on chopping samples and more on replaying them with live instrumentation, specifically high-pitched "whining" synthesizers and deep, rolling basslines derived from 70s Parliament-Funkadelic records. The vibe was cinematic, hedonistic, and tailored for car stereo systems.

- Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle (1993)
- 2Pac - All Eyez on Me (1996)
Dirty South
Fast hi-hats, soul samples, distinct slang. "The South got something to say."
While the coasts feuded, the South was building an empire. Outkast brought a psychedelic, funk-infused musicality (Organized Noize production), while labels like No Limit and Cash Money introduced the "bounce" rhythm—energetic, double-time hi-hats and heavy 808 bass kicks that would eventually evolve into modern Trap music.

- Scarface - The Diary (1994)
- Three 6 Mafia - Mystic Stylez (1995)
The Midwest Swing
Rapid-fire flows, unquantized drums, and Motown soul. Innovation from the heartland.
The North carved a lane between the coasts by mastering speed and timing. In Chicago, the "Chopper" style emerged—rapid-fire lyricism over smooth melodies (Twista). In Detroit, J Dilla revolutionized production with unquantized, "drunken" drum patterns, while Eminem introduced complex multi-syllabic rhyme schemes that reset the bar for technical ability.
- Common - Resurrection (1994)
- Twista - Adrenaline Rush (1997)
- Eminem - The Slim Shady LP (1999)
